About Implications

My name is Neal Zupančič. I have been blogging and journaling off and on for about 25 years. During that time, I have studied a variety of topics - from computer science to theatre, mathematical modelling to postmodern continental philosophy, cognitive science, anthropology, intercultural communication, linguistics, and more - and earned a BA in Political Science followed by an M. Ed. in Curriculum and Development.

I consider myself a generalist with a broad base of knowledge from which to try to understand the world. My previous blog was devoted to understanding the country of Georgia and explaining this understanding to those outside the country. During Covid-19, I began writing weekly updates about how the pandemic was progressing in the country, using simple mathematical models, my prior forecasting experience (from participating in the Good Judgment Project), and close analysis of local and global news to bring some sense of order and predictability to the events we were experiencing here in Tbilisi.

At the same time, I have a deep and abiding interest in social issues, broadly defined - how we organize ourselves, through culture, politics, and other social technologies, and how we might improve upon existing systems, in light of what we know about human nature. Having lived in two very different countries - the US for 29 years, and Georgia for 11 - I have firsthand experience with how many of our assumptions about “the way things are” are contingent upon a specific set of circumstances that we rarely understand or even acknowledge.

I wanted to set up this publication to be of somewhat more general interest than my previous blog. Analysis will not be limited to Georgia, although I will often refer to Georgia as a case study with which I am familiar, or a point of reference or inspiration for exploring some other topic. In short, I will cover the same topics I’ve always covered - culture, politics, news, forecasting, social issues - but with more of a focus on the broader implications.
